Thanks to the vision of Cheryl Smith (local journalist and radio
personality), the concept of DMCBAA was initiated in 1987. In January, 1987,
Cheryl Smith and Dr. Vivian Bradley Johnson, representatives of the Dallas/Fort Worth Chapter of the Florida A&M University
(FAMU) Alumni Association took the lead in raising the consciousness of other Historically Black College and University (HBCU)
alumni in the Metroplex.
Organizational meeting were held and the Dallas Metroplex
Council of Black Alumni Associations was formed. The Constitution and By-Laws
Committee was appointed by Interim President Susie Crawford (Norfolk State University) with Thurston “T.J.” Jones
(Southern University) as the Chairperson. Members of the committee were: Delores
Packer (Grambling State University), Cheryl Smith (FAMU), Don Hudson (Dillard University), Gene Crawford (Central State University),
John Woods (Southern University), Brenda Pugh (Hampton University), and Vonja Shields (Southern University). The committee presented a constitution, which was ratified on June 27, 1987.
DMCBAA is the first organization of its kind in the nation. The purpose of the organization is to promote unity and improve relations among alumni
organizations from HBCUs, and to promote and increase attendance at HBCUs. The
following individuals were elected in November, 1987, and formally installed on March 26, 1988, by Donald C. Wade, Regional
Coordinator for the Council of National Alumni Associations (CNAA): John Woods (Southern), President; Vivian Johnson (FAMU),
Vice President; David Sullivan (Dillard), Treasurer; Lorri Randolph (North Texas State University), Recording Secretary; Steve
Hamilton (Dillard), Corresponding Secretary; Cheryl Smith (FAMU), Media Specialist; Leonard Matthews (Tuskegee), Parliamentarian;
and Thurston Jones (Southern), Chaplain.
